Summer Finds II: Three trends I’m following right now

July 19, 2017

purposeful summer trends

Last month, I shared a few of my favorite Summer Finds. This month, I’m tracking some interesting trends that align with a more purposeful approach to business.

#SlowFashion: Having worked in retail real estate, I followed the rise of fast fashion pretty closely. Despite the allure of trendy clothes at low prices, I’m seeing growing momentum behind the #slowfashion movement. More brands are committing to greater transparency and improved sustainability efforts. While we’re also seeing a new crop of sustainable fashion retailers pop up.

#TheSocialCEO: This, of course, is not a real hashtag, but I’m referring to CEOs who are bringing a voice and an opinion to the table. I follow a number of companies, who, in my opinion, are leaders in brand purpose. In most cases, the CEO is one of the greatest evangelists of that purpose and engages more broadly with that purpose on social media or through blogging. When appropriate, executive presence can motivate and inspire. This study is a bit dated, but great info on the benefits of #TheSocialCEO.

#GenZ: Good news. We can stop talking about millennials…and start talking about GenZ. GenZ caught my attention when I first started my blog because of their strong feelings around environmentalism and their bias toward making a difference. Over 60% want their jobs to impact the world and 76% are concerned about humanity’s impact on the planet. It seems apparent that a company with a purpose greater than profit alone will not only appeal to, but be a requirement, for this generation.  If you aren’t already looking ahead to the impact of #GenZ, here’s a quick read.
