Why you should connect with these three types of people

Have you ever encountered people whose enthusiasm and energy spreads? Or conversely, those who bring a sense of calm to a conversation or room? I love being around these people.

I am not an expert on personality types, but I do believe we gain something from each person we meet. I learned many years ago about the importance of connecting with others and the value of building relationships. Since starting my business, this has been magnified. I’ve noticed a few key traits about the different types of people who have become invaluable in helping me build my business. I’m calling them magnets, sages and counselors.

Magnets are people who are full of energy and ideas. They not only draw people to them, but they also draw people together. They thrive off being connectors. Magnets are great at making introductions, helping generate new leads and spreading ideas. I learned quickly after starting my business that small businesses need other small businesses. We need each other to share our services, our networks and our experiences. I challenge you to find a magnet – or better yet be a magnet.

Like magnets, sages also draw people to them. But, for a very different reason. Sages are calm, wise and steadfast. They’ve learned from their experiences and are willing to share the lessons. Sages inspire us because they have walked the path before us. They know that we can and will keep moving forward. Meet with the sages around you. Ask them your hard questions. Then allow them to ask you questions that are even harder.

While I love to encounter magnets and sages, finding counselors is less common and even more valuable. Counselors are a hybrid of magnets and sages, leveraging their experience or expertise to chance with you. Whether that means as a client, a customer or an investor, they can be the key to unlocking greater potential for you or your business. Counselors not only provide you with opportunities, but they also help instill confidence. These relationships are important and should be treated as such.

In the last year, I have learned that each relationship is special. They are also fluid. As we build new connections, take chances and gain experience, we are also transforming ourselves into magnets, sages and counselors. This is the value of connecting.
